Students meet sporting greats during studio visit
Film and Television Studies students from Southampton Solent University got to meet some of biggest names in sport during a recent visit to BT Sport's state-of-the-art studio facility in London.
BT Sport's studio is based in the former 2012 Olympics International Broadcast Centre in Stratford. They transmit all their studio programmes from a 10,000 square foot studio which houses the largest LED lighting rig in the world.
"It’s great for students to see the way television production is advancing and the innovative way that BT have designed their studio, bucking the trend for small virtual studios," says senior lecturer in Studio Production, Jonathan Plummer.
The students, who have been studying studio production, were given a tour of the production areas before going onto the studio floor to see The Clare Balding Show being recorded.
During the university’s first visit to the studios, the sport chat show featured champion jockey A.P. McCoy, Olympic sailor and Solent University Honorary Doctor Ben Ainslie and tennis star Elena Baltacha. The second visit featured England football captain Steven Gerrard, rugby legend Jonah Lomu and world and Olympic champion hurdler Sally Gunnell.
The studio has been designed to have several live programmes being transmitted from the studio at the same time giving the impression of a busy sports hub – a first for studio programmes of this kind.
Student Tyrone Zagnoiev said, "It’s amazing to see how a studio gets shows and games out on live television, it was a great learning experience."
