More students, staff and the wider community are set to benefit from the formalisation of an exciting partnership between Southampton Solent University (SSU) and the stunning £27million world class Mary Rose Museum, based at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Two Solent graduates who have already benefitted from paid internships at the museum joined the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Van Gore CBE and the Museum’s Chief Executive, Rear Admiral John Lippiett CB CBE DL at the official partnership signing on Friday 4 July.

Tiffe Harris from Woolston has been at the museum since her graduation in 2013. The BA (Hons) Business Management with Entrepreneurship graduate is enjoying assisting the management team and helping to run major events during her year-long internship.

Following her internship, BA Hons English and Professional Writing and MA Creative Writing, Industry and Practice graduate, Stacey Court has been offered a full-time position as Friends Administrator for the Museum.
She says, “Every day here is completely different and I have learned to be extremely flexible. My experience has been ever growing and I have widened my range of skills.

Through the partnership, both SSU and the Museum will benefit from professional development opportunities, collaborative projects, joint events and the use of each other’s facilities.

Speaking at the signing Rear Admiral John Lippiett, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University in 2011, said: “We are delighted to cement our relationship with Southampton Solent University through this partnership and to be able to continue to offer internships to their students. The ethos of Solent and what we are trying to do at the museum with our learning packages are very similar. We both strive to be inclusive, raise aspirations and help realise potential,”

“Nurturing and developing the learning outreach programme is fundamental to where the Trust wants to go in the future. In this respect, we can benefit from each other enormously” he added.

This is the latest in a series of partnership accords that the University has signed with regional education and business organisations including: Business South, B&Q, The Ageas Bowl and the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce.

Speaking after the ceremony Professor Van Gore said, “It’s incredibly exciting for the University and its students to have the opportunity to work with a world class organisation such as this.

“There are great synergies between the two organisations and I am sure there are going to be some really exciting developments in the future - particularly around education, learning and science.”

The Mary Rose captured the world's imagination when she was raised from the seabed in 1982. She is the only sixteenth century warship on display anywhere in the world and the new Museum built around the hull reunites her with over 19,000 artefacts.
