Vision For 2020: Southampton - City of Sport
Business leaders and key figures in the sporting industry came together to celebrate and consider the contribution sport makes to Southampton and how it can help shape the city's sporting future on Friday 20 June 2014.
In its fourth year, Vision for 2020 is a series of events organised by Southampton Solent University to create new opportunities locally for the region’s graduates, and help the city’s economy to thrive into the next decade and beyond.
An exciting selection of speakers and a panel from both business and sport discussed the impact of sport on the city's economic prosperity, community spirit and wellbeing. More than 70 delegates at the Vision For 2020 event considered the positive impact sport makes on the local economy through tourism and inward investment.
The event was compered by BBC Sport's Tony Husband, with speaker slots from Lindsey Fraser (Olympian, Team GB diving coach) who spoke of the Olympic experience and the legacy of London2012, Rod Bransgrove (Chairman of The Ageas Bowl) discussed the economic and social impact of a professional county cricket club in Hampshire and Lawrie McMenemy (Premier League and International football manager) spoke of the development of football as big business.
The afternoon concluded with a lively interactive panel debate between Aaron Phipps (Paralympian), Mark Abrahams (Saints Foundation), Phil Green (Sport Solent) and Dr. Richard Elliot (Lawrie McMenemy Centre for Football Research).
