The green alternative to the beach

SouthWest Germany, the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg, boasts more hours of sunshine than any other part of the country. Enjoying a Mediterranean climate is Lake Constance, where Mainau Island has beautiful gardens plus fun attractions for the family. In high summer, Europa-Park, rated the world’s Number 1 theme park, scores for water attractions galore, with more to come later in the year. Soak up the sun on bikes. Pedal through the Achertal valley’s sunny vineyards and fresh pine forests; explore the Brenztal and Lonetal valleys, with their prehistoric caves! Welcome to the Sunny Side of Germany! www.tourism-bw.com

Mainau: Flowers, fun and food for families
Mainau Island on Lake Constance is known for its fabulous flowers. Roses rule in June, with 1,000 varieties blooming in the Italian Rose Garden and along the Wild and Bush Rose Promenade. From late August to mid-October, dahlias take over: 12,000 plants and 250 varieties, from two to six feet tall! And youngsters love Children’s Land, with Water World, Blumi’s Lakeside World and a farmyard with a petting zoo and pony rides. To relax? Choose from 10 different places to eat! www.mainau.de/en

Europa-Park: Swing to summer
With over 100 attractions and shows in 15 European themed areas, visitors are guaranteed thrills and entertainment. They can ride the high-speed rollercoasters and cool off in fun water attractions. On the Fjord Rafting adventure, a roaring torrent races through a Scandinavian landscape. Guests love staying the night in the park's own 4-star themed hotels or the Europa-Park Camp Resort. Since May, the new ‘Krønasår - The Museum Hotel’ welcomes visitors in a Nordic ambience; new from November 28 is Rulantica, a water park, with 25 family attractions. www.europapark.com

Achertal: Jewels of the Valley
In the Black Forest, some 20 miles south of Baden-Baden, the Achertal valley is glorious: orchards, vineyards, rolling hills and pine forests. Between the Baden Wine Route and the Black Forest National Park are three delightful villages: Kappelrodeck, known for its red wines; Ottenhöfen, with its water mills; the health resort of Seebach, near Mummelsee lake. Hike miles of well-marked trails; head for the Black Forest’s highest peak, the Hornisgrinde. At 1,164m/3,800ft, the air is clean, views are stunning. www.achertal.de

The Swabian Alb: A cycle tour with a difference
In the Swabian Alb’s rolling limestone hills, some 75 miles east of Stuttgart, the Brenz Valley and Lonetal Valley are perfect for cycling holidays. Great fun for families with children is an easy 26-km/15-mile-long trail, called the Cave Tour Route (Höhlentour). In Giengen-Hürben, at the HöhlenErlebnisWelt (Cave Experience World), prehistoric caves and Stone Age adventures bring the past to life. At the Vogelherd Archäopark, experience mammoth hunters in the Ice Age. Along the way, stop and relax at refreshing lakes. www.schwaebischealb.de/touren/hoehlentour
