New cruise insurance website introduces cover aimed at meeting the unique needs of cruise travellers

A specialist new website launches today – www.cruiseprotection.co.uk – introducing cruise insurance specifically designed to meet the unique needs of a cruise traveller - something which a standard travel insurance policy may not always do.

This cruise insurance has been designed to meet the gaps in the current market for travel insurance, where an independent study* revealed that there were a number of issues with current provisions:

  • 29% of UK travel insurance is bundled into another financial services product, and these products do not cover pre-existing medical conditions;
  • no cruise policies for UK travellers cover more than a total of £25,000 cancellation risk, and the increase in high value cruises leaves many insufficiently insured or not wishing to take their chance;
  • trip and annual travel insurance usually has a cancellation cover limit of £3000 and is restrictive for mature travellers;
  • 80% of all claims on a cruise policy are cancellation claims. Cruises can be booked up to 18-24 months ahead, therefore cancellation cover is vital. Many cruisers pay in full on booking their cruise, for convenience and also to receive discounted prices;
  • most cruise and travel policies cease to cover consumers over the age of 78;
  • insurers who will provide cover for pre-existing medical conditions have a very restricted view on what they want to cover, rather than a common-sense approach to assessing the stability of a condition, the duration of cruise and the destination of the cruise.

This bespoke policy is designed to bridge these gaps by offering:

  • cancellation cover for the full invoice value, which can include flights, cruise, hotels, transfers and extended stays.
  • full cover if one of the service providers (for example, the flight provider or cruise line) goes into insolvency;
  • travellers with pre-existing conditions are eligible to apply and will be accepted subject to acceptance following a medical screening;
  • no age discrimination – all travellers irrespective of age are eligible to apply;
  • exceptional sum insured limits and comprehensive cover.
