Spelman College, Pro-Mozart Society of Atlanta and Atlanta Music Club concert features soprano Laura English-Robinson at Spelman's Sisters Chapel.

ATLANTA (October 27, 2010) A diverse repertoire of classical music and spirituals will take center stage at the first concert co-hosted by Spelman College and two of Atlanta’s oldest music associations, The Pro-Mozart Society of Atlanta and the Atlanta Music Club on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, in Spelman’s Sisters Chapel. The concert will feature soprano Laura English-Robinson, M.M., an instructor in the department of music at Spelman College.

The program will include a concert aria by Mozart, French chanson of Henri Duparc, a set of Spanish songs by Joaquin Turina, an operatic aria from “Adrianna Lecouvreur” by Francesco Cilea, English art songs by African-American composers, and Negro spirituals arranged by contemporary African-American composers to include current and former Spelman faculty members Marian Harrison, D.M. and Willis Laurence James as well as Uzee Brown, Jr., D.M.A., chair of the department of music at Morehouse College. English-Robinson will be accompanied on piano by Joyce Johnson, D.Mus., college organist and professor emerita at Spelman College.

“This concert is designed to provide a very special afternoon for all music lovers,” said English-Robinson, who has performed as a soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, in Alice Tully and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City, and at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. “There is something for everyone; Spanish, Italian, English and French literature will be represented as we begin a musical journey with Mozart, travel through the centuries, and end with African-American composers.”

Kevin Pritchett, co-president of The Pro-Mozart Society of Atlanta, and Linda Wickham, president of the Atlanta Music Club, both agree the first-time collaboration not only builds upon the reputation that each has established within the Atlanta music community but also gives the 95-year-old Atlanta Music Club, The Pro-Mozart Society of Atlanta, which is celebrating its 47th season, and Spelman College founded 129 years ago, exposure to new audiences.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Sisters Chapel is located at 350 Spelman Lane, Atlanta 30314. For more information, contact The Pro-Mozart Society of Atlanta at (404) 667-4700 or visit www.mozartatlanta.com.
