Stag Bakeries’ Seaweed Oatcake has received the top Gold 3 star from the Great Taste Awards, the world’s largest food awards scheme.

The Great Taste Awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food hosts the prestigious awards each year. In 2015, over 400 judges, including specially trained food writers, critics and chefs from across the food industry came together at 49 judging days. Each product is blind-tasted and awarded purely on its quality and taste. From the 10,000 entries, Stag Bakeries’ Seaweed Oatcake is amongst only 130 foods to have achieved the highest and most coveted three star rating.

Along with the remaining 3 star winners, Stag’s Seaweed Oatcake goes forward to be considered for the Great Taste Golden Forks, awarded to the absolute best, which will be announced at a celebration dinner at the Royal Garden Hotel, London on 7thSeptember.

This is the second time in recent years that Stag has taken a top award. In 2013, the Stornoway Water Biscuit with Seaweed received the 3 star award before going on to win Best Scottish Product and the Nigel Barden Award for Provenance.

Charlie Macdonald, owner at Stag Bakeries said “We are absolutely delighted to have attained another 3 star Great Taste Award which provide a benchmark for quality. The awards are very prestigious especially as each product is blind-tasted by a panel of industry experts. Awards are given just on taste and there is no influence with fancy, decorative packaging. It is a fantastic achievement for the entire team.”

The Seaweed Oatcake is made at Stag’s bakery on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and was launched to create a range with provenance and, because of Stag’s location, it naturally had to incorporate a taste of the sea. The oatcakes include a unique blend of seaweed sustainably sourced from the Isle’s sea lochs. As well as the Seaweed Oatcake, a Stornoway Water Biscuit with Seaweed and Seaweed Shortbread complete the range.
