Sports Leaders UK, the independent charity delivering sports leadership awards and qualifications to more than 200,000 people a year, supports the London 2012 mass-participation legacy plans, unveiled by Sport England on Monday 15 November. Originally founded under the name of the British Sports Trust in 1982, Sports Leaders UK now has a portfolio of 13 awards and qualifications, and trains more than 200,000 Sports Leaders every year. Sports Leaders UK supports the pledge to recruit, train and deploy 40,000 Sports Leaders as the next generation of volunteers to organise and lead grassroots sporting activities. This programme shares many similarities to the work of Sports Leaders UK and will inspire even more people to make sport happen in their communities. Sports Leaders UK does not rely on Government funding to exist, that’s what makes its sustainable model for delivering a network of more than 200,000 Sports Leaders every year into communities across the UK even more valuable. Sports Leaders UK’s network of tutors work at every age group in schools, colleges, youth and community organisations and with adults. Every course provides volunteers to run sport, dance or outdoor activities. Sports Leaders UK is dedicated to providing opportunities for young people and adults to learn leadership skills, gain nationally recognised qualifications, and inspire their community to live more active and healthy lifestyles. Notes to editors Sports Leaders UK is a charity delivering sports leadership awards and qualifications to more than 200,000 people a year, through 4,000 schools, colleges, local authorities, prisons and young offender units. It acts as an Awarding Body providing nationally recognised qualifications, and has a Foundation to deliver free or subsidised courses in areas of greatest need.
