Sports Leaders UK has a unique model for delivering a network of more than 200,000 Sports Leaders every year, and does not rely on Government funding to exist, making it a sustainable and reliable awards and qualifications provider. Thanks to a new lower age limit Sports Leaders UK qualifications now offer progression from age 13, with the Level 1 qualifications to Higher Education, enabling schools, colleges and universities to integrate leadership into their academic programmes and helping students to develop and demonstrate skills that go far beyond leading sport. The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership and Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership offer Year 9 students the opportunity to gain essential leadership skills, and provide a good foundation for progression to Level 2 and 3 qualifications. The recently launched Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership is an exciting new development that gives students, aged 14 years and over, the chance to develop their organisation, motivation and communication skills, whilst also focusing on positive role models in sport, how to mentor others, and how to use leadership skills in a variety of settings. This new qualification complements the delivery of other programmes of study, including GCSE PE, BTEC Diplomas, ADSAN awards and Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, and has proved very popular, with more than 5,000 candidates registered in the last three months. In the current competitive employment market it is now more important than ever for students to demonstrate what they can do beyond their academic qualifications. The Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leadership is a vital bridge to further education and employment, and builds upon the skills and experience gained through the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 and 2 qualifications. Candidates who have successfully completed the Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leadership gain an additional 30 UCAS points and enhance their applications to prospective Higher Education Institutes. Chief Executive of Sports Leaders UK, Linda Plowright said: “We are working tirelessly to showcase the achievements of Sports Leaders and tutors at every level of sport, nationally and regionally, and we are keen to welcome more tutors into our team. In spite of hard times ahead we believe training and empowering an army of Sports Leaders who will get more people active, both in competitive and recreational sport, must be part of the future of grassroots and school sport.” Note to editors: Sports Leaders UK is a charity delivering sports leadership awards and qualifications to 200,000 people a year, through 4,000 schools, colleges, local authorities, prisons and young offender units. It acts as an Awarding Body providing nationally recognised qualifications and has a Foundation that delivers free or subsidised courses in areas of greatest need.
