Architects Soini & Horto Ltd wins architectural competition for hotel to be constructed next to REDI shopping centre

A hotel plot is planned in connection with REDI, under construction at Kalasatama, Helsinki. For this planning work, SRV organised a limited invited architectural competition in cooperation with the City of Helsinki. The jury decided unanimously to award first place to the competition entry "HILA", by Architects Soini & Horto Ltd.

The purpose of the competition was to find a feasible hotel building which is architecturally fresh and high quality, and which will complement the Kalasatama area and REDI, while integrating naturally into its environment.

SRV has signed a letter of intent on the construction of the hotel with Restel, Finland's largest hotel and restaurant sector company, which has 43 hotels in Finland. The new hotel will be built next to the REDI shopping centre, and it is a planned to have 200-250 rooms, a restaurant and a café.

A compact urban centre is currently being constructed at Kalasatama. In the next few years, around 20,000 people will come to live in the area, i.e. Kalasatama will have around the same number of residents as the city district of Kallio. In addition, jobs for around 8,000 people are planned for Kalasatama. The Helsinki City Board has allocated to SRV a site in Kalasatama for the planning of the hotel. The project still requires a change in the city plan, so the result of the architectural competition will be used as a basis for zoning the site and in the further planning of the hotel.

“There is currently a severe shortage of hotel rooms in Helsinki, so the new hotel will complement well the services of Kalasatama, REDI and neighbouring areas as well as Helsinki as a whole,” says SRV Executive Vice President Timo Nieminen.

At the heart of Kalasatama, Helsinki, SRV is currently building REDI, which will consist of eight tower buildings and a shopping and experience centre, due to open in 2018. Majakka, the first residential tower to be completed at REDI, will rise to a height of 132 metres and it will be Finland's tallest residential building. The new hotel, to be built on a site next to REDI, will complement the REDI complex well.

The competition rules of the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) were adhered to in the architectural competition. Four architectural offices were asked to enter the invited competition: Architects Soini & Horto Ltd, Tengblom Eriksson Architects Ltd, Helin&Co Architects and Arkkitehtitoimisto K2S Oy.

The jury consisted of SRV's Executive Vice President Timo Nieminen and REDI Project Director Juhani Katko, Architect Salla Hoppu and Project Manager Tuomas Hakala of the Helsinki City Planning Department, and Architect Mikko Heikkinen, of Arkkitehtuuritoimisto Heikkinen-Komonen Oy, an expert member selected in collaboration with the competition participants.
