SRV to build Ruutana School for 400 children in Kangasala

The City of Kangasala has chosen SRV to implement the Ruutana school centre construction and renovation project. The cooperative project management contract for the school is valued at approximately EUR 15 million. Preparations for construction will begin immediately, and the project will be entered into SRV’s order backlog for December.

The project consists of repairs to buildings on the plot, and the construction of a new building adjacent to the existing ones. Construction of the new building will begin in March 2023, and is scheduled for completion in November 2024. The total area of the new building will be approximately 5,300 square metres (gross).

During early 2025, a wooden school building dating from 1925 will also be renovated. At the same time, one of the old stone schools on the plot will be demolished and work will be carried out on the yard. The entire project will be completed during summer 2025. The school centre will have facilities for approximately 390 children in grades 0–6.

“School projects have significant social impact, and we get to implement pleasant spatial solutions that support young people’s learning. We’re currently building a new school centre in the Lamminrahka neighbourhood of Kangasala as well, so the Ruutana school project is a natural continuation of our good cooperation with the City of Kangasala,” says SRV’s Henri Sulankivi, Senior Vice President, Regional Units.

The City of Kangasala is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030. In the Ruutana school centre project, the low-carbon target for the construction phase is to build a building that will be as adaptable and long-lasting as possible. The new building will be Class A in terms of energy efficiency. Low-carbon solutions have also been taken into account in material choices for the building. Its façade will mainly consist of brick masonry that will be laid on site.

“This is an important and long-awaited project for the City of Kangasala. It’s a challenging site, as work will be carried out next to an operating school and the project includes both new construction and the renovation of existing buildings. By choosing a cooperative contract model, we wanted to minimise the risks associated with the project. SRV received good points for quality in the comparison, and we’re pleased to have a competent contractor implementing this school centre project,” says Merja Saarilahti, Construction Manager, City of Kangasala.
