SRV to carry out the renovation and new building of the historic Hämeenlinna Lyseo

SRV and the City of Hämeenlinna have signed an agreement on the renovation of the historically valuable upper secondary school building located in the Hämeenlinna Lyseo block and the construction of a new sports and dining building. The project will be implemented as a project management contract with a target and guaranteed maximum price, including the design and construction of the project. The renovation and new building are scheduled for completion at the end of 2028.

The value of the agreement to SRV is approximately EUR 21.5 million, and the project will be entered into the company’s order backlog when it moves into the implementation phase. The project will begin with a development phase, during which the plans will be specified in terms of, among other things, the functionality of the premises, technical solutions, costs and schedule before moving into the actual implementation phase. The project supports SRV’s objective of increasing the share of renovation projects in its business operations. It also supports SRV’s strategic objective of strengthening the company’s leading position in collaborative and other forms of contracting, in which the company is particularly strong in public sector projects.

“We thank the City of Hämeenlinna for the opportunity to jointly launch the renovation project of this historically significant building. In the project, we will be able to utilise our previous experience in the demanding renovation of historic learning environments. We are currently carrying out the development phase of the extensive renovation project for the University of Helsinki’s Porthania building and in Tampere, we are constructing the new Research Hub building on Tampere University’s Hervanta campus, adjacent to the existing Sähkötalo, while also renovating the sections of the current building that will be connected to the new development. Previously, we have renovated, among others, the Physicum and Snellmania teaching facilities, Think Corner and Kaisa House in Helsinki. Most recently, one of our demanding renovation projects, the Pasila Government Services Centre, was completed for Senate Properties,” says Kimmo Hyry, Unit Director at SRV.

The Lyseo building was originally built for school use in 1888 and expanded in 1937. The building was last renovated in 1991. The building is protected and is part of a nationally significant built cultural environment (RKY).

“For the City of Hämeenlinna, the key objective of this project is to achieve a high-quality and sustainable outcome that will serve its users well into the future. The aim is to deliver a solution that is economically, technically, and operationally sound throughout its entire lifecycle. The project will be implemented in accordance with the City’s quality management plan for building construction, which places strong emphasis on economic, social, and environmental responsibility,” says Janne Lappalainen, Project Manager at the City of Hämeenlinna.

In the renovation, the historic building will be refurbished in terms of, among other things, building services, indoor air and accessibility. The block’s current annex and Janne Hall will be demolished, and a new building containing the upper secondary school’s sports and dining facilities will be built in their place.

The aim is to implement an energy-efficient and long-lasting entity that supports the building’s intended use. The project will be implemented to energy class A. The scope of the section to be renovated is approximately 5,700 gross square metres and that of the new section approximately 2,770 gross square metres.
