SRV to launch construction of Matinkylä upper secondary school new school will provide premises for 900 students

SRV and the Premises Services unit of the City of Espoo have signed an implementation phase agreement to construct the Matinkylä upper secondary school in Espoo. This new building project will be carried out as a cooperative project management contract valued at about EUR 41,5 million, of which SRV’s contract accounts for around EUR 37,5 million. The project will be recognised in SRV’s order backlog in October and the construction work will start during November-December. The new school will be completed by the end of 2023.

The new building will be built on the west side of the Iso Omena shopping centre and will have premises for about 900 upper secondary school students. The building will have approximately 11,000 m2 of gross floor area. In addition to learning environments, the building will include a sports hall suitable for sports competitions.

Planning for the project began in October 2020 with a development phase that was extended for a year. The original plan has been developed during the development phase so that the originally four-storey school section, which wraps around the sports hall, will now be located on five floors next to the sports hall, making the building staggered in its shape. While developing the functionality, the efficiency of space utilisation has also been improved.

“The construction project plans for Matinkylä upper secondary school were developed in a collaborative spirit with the project partners. The implementation solution now achieved serves the goals set for the project very well. It’s great to be involved in constructing the learning environments of the future,” says Marko Räisänen, Unit Director responsible for the project at SRV.

The architectural plans of the school are the handiwork of architects Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Arkkitehdit, whose proposal is entitled Lyhty (Lantern). The building will have large windows, thanks to which its interiors will be bright and connected to the environment. In addition to classrooms, the Matinkylä upper secondary school will feature more adaptable learning environments. Such spaces have previously been mainly implemented in comprehensive school buildings, rather than in upper secondary schools. The premises of the school will be designed and dimensioned to be suitable for a wide variety of activities. They will be implemented to enable them to be combined for use by larger teaching groups.
