SRV will implement the Kirkkonummi shared campus as a lifecycle project – upper secondary schools and other educational institutions under one roof in 2027
SRV and the municipality of Kirkkonummi have signed an agreement to implement a shared campus under a lifecycle model in Kirkkonummi. The total value of the agreement for SRV, including lifecycle services, is approximately EUR 47 million. This order is recognised in the order backlog in April. It further bolsters SRV’s order backlog, which exceeded one billion euros at the end of 2023, and in which public-sector demand in particular has remained relatively strong. The project will be carried out with a lifecycle-wise approach in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
The shared campus will be built on the northern side of the Fyyri library building. It will include the Porkkala upper secondary school, Kyrkslätts upper secondary school for Swedish-speaking students, and the Kirkkonummi Music School, Art School and Adult Education Centre. The shared campus provides facilities for approximately 800 upper secondary school students and about 550 music and art school students. The planned space solutions will also support the extensive use of the premises by residents of the municipality and round out Kirkkonummi’s network of premises for leisure activities.
The shared campus will measure around 9,000 square metres (gross). Construction work is scheduled to start in late 2024 and the students will have access to their new premises in 2027. SRV will also be responsible for the property for 20 years after completion, taking care of facility maintenance and upkeep as well as keeping its energy consumption at the target level.
“I’m impressed by how SRV’s negotiation team was able to satisfy all of the client’s most important requirements and wishes with its design solution for the shared campus. The new building is designed to be worthy of its location next to Fyyri and the Kirkkonummi church. The teachers and especially the students will have excellent facilities, which can also be used by all residents of the municipality in the evenings and on weekends,” says Kari Toikka, premises manager for the municipality of Kirkkonummi.
The lifecycle model is becoming more common in public-sector projects also in Kirkkonummi
Earlier, SRV has carried out several locally significant projects in Kirkkonummi. In 2020, SRV completed the Jokirinne Learning Centre, which has premises for more than 1,300 children. At that time, this project was one of the largest investments made by the municipality of Kirkkonummi. It was also implemented as a lifecycle project, with SRV taking responsibility for building maintenance for 10 years. In 2022, next to the Learning Centre, SRV completed the Kirkkonummi Wellbeing Centre, which serves the entire region. In addition, SRV completed the construction of the Fyyri Library in 2020. This building won the Finlandia Award for Architecture and an Honorary Mention at the Concrete Structure of 2020 Awards.
“It’s wonderful to be able to once again create something new for Kirkkonummi with high-quality learning premises for students. We’ll continue to design this project in close cooperation with the client and the future users of the premises. The lifecycle model has proven to be a good approach to school construction — when the property is built and maintained by a single party, the municipality has an excellent setting for providing services and high-quality teaching to its residents,” says Jani Kuivamäki, who heads up lifecycle projects at SRV.
The lifecycle model is becoming more common, especially in public-sector projects. In addition to the Jokirinne Learning Centre, SRV has carried out other public-sector projects under this project model. SRV completed the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages in Myllypuro in 2023 and the Siuntion Sydän educational campus in Siuntio in 2022 as lifecycle projects. Currently, the Wintteri multipurpose building is under construction in Uusikaupunki, scheduled for completion in February 2025.
Sustainable and responsible solutions in the lifecycle project
Upon completion, the Kirkkonummi shared campus will be an energy-efficient building. The property will utilise demand-side energy management, which means that more energy is consumed when it is cheaper. It will also feature a hybrid heating system combining district heating and renewable energy sources.
Stormwater will be controlled with an extensive underground water retention system on the plot. In addition, the property will have a green roof. Material selections will favour low-carbon building materials, and in the spirit of the circular economy recycled materials will also be used in protective wall structures, for instance. The carbon footprint of the building will be 30 per cent lower than average.
