Peace Prize Winner Rigoberta Menchu will visit the IUSY-festival in Malmo, Sweden
Peace Prize Winner Rigoberta Menchu will visit the IUSY-festival in Malmo, Sweden. Rigoberta Menchu will speak before 6000 festival attenders from over 100 countries on a festival arranged by the International Union of Socialist Youth and the Swedish Social Democratic Youth. She will be one of the main speakers together with Swedish minister of Migration and Asylum at a seminar entitled: Leading the Struggle for Equal Rights - Challenges for a New Generation. Rigoberta Menchu was presented with the Nobel Peace prize for her work on the rights of the Mayas in Guatemala. The oppression against the Mayas is an example on how a native population has had their human rights set aside. -The work on creating equal conditions between people in the future is one of the most important questions for young international social democracy. The theme is one of three which are prioritised during the festival. Women all over the world are discriminated and not treated equal to men. We have to have this discussion and this is a proper forum, says Mr. Mikael Damberg - president of the Swedish Social Democratic Youth. There are exclusively women speakers with different perspectives on the theme of equality. Also Nora Cortiñas from the organisation of "Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo" will speak at the seminar. Nora Cortiñas is a Peace Prize nominee and a prime witness in the Spanish trials on Augusto Pinochet. The IUSY-festival (24-30/7) will contain seminars, workshops, concerts, a manifestation against racism, a progressive film festival, café's and restaurants. Among the guests are Thabo Mbeki - president of South Africa and head of ANC, Mike Moore - General Director of WTO, Alfred Gusenbauer - president of the social democratic party of Austria and Swedish prime minister Goran Persson.
