Forensic Science graduate is “prepared for anything”
A graduate has fulfilled a childhood ambition to work in forensics after studying at Staffordshire University.
Libby Bourne, 22, from Longton, explained: “My journey started when I was seven years old. I remember saying that I wanted to be just like Abby from TV crime series ‘NCIS’ and getting confused looks from the people around me!”
Studying BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation gave Libby hands on experience in Staffordshire University’s specialist laboratories, crime scene house, mock law courts and the opportunity do a placement year working in industry.
From ballistics to chemical analysis and a dissertation on animal forensics investigating heat damage in feline hair, Libby covered a range of topics during her studies.
“I'd say Forensic Investigation is the best course to get a taste of everything to decide what you want to do…it really prepares you for anything.” Libby said.
”I managed to find an incredible placement at Intertek food services, who helped me to understand exactly what I was capable of.
“It helped me to develop my skills not only in the lab but also my confidence in a scientific environment, which I think did help me, not only in uni, but also progressing onto a job role outside of uni.”
During her degree, Libby found a passion for digital forensics and the analysis of information retrieved from digital devices such as computers and phones to drones and dash cams. She has now graduated and secured a job as a Digital Forensics Technician, providing vital evidence to support criminal investigations.
“I struggled to have confidence in my abilities for a long time. For me, my experience at Staffordshire University, with my placement and the support from the friendships I made, changed me as a person.”
Libby added: “No matter what you think of yourself, you are more than that.”
