Policing graduate is a force to be reckoned with
A graduate who is the first in her family to go to university has achieved a first class degree and a job with Staffordshire Police
Ellie Bowers, 21, from Lightwood, chose to stay local and study BSc (Hons) Professional Policing at Staffordshire University.
“It's an exciting career. I didn't want to be stuck in an office doing a nine to five job every day. In policing you get to meet people and you get to build relationships with the community.” Ellie explained.
The degree is a recognised route into policing, delivered under licence by the College of Policing, and is specifically designed for those seeking to become police constables.
During their studies, students have chance to use facilities including a dedicated Crime Scene House to practise real-life situations and investigations, and mock courtrooms to get a taste of the justice system.
“The degree’s allowed me to grow both professionally and personally, to have those skills that I need to be a great officer.
“The experience and knowledge that the lecturers give to you is great. We had lots of guest speakers from different police forces as well.”
Ellie excelled on the course and contributed to extracurricular activities including supporting students on lower levels and taking part in a guest lecture about her experiences.
Ellie found an interest in firearms investigation during her studies and explored the Firearms Command Structure for her dissertation, interviewing various firearms officers, including those of senior ranks.
“I think this course gives people the confidence they need. At 18, most people are anxious and timid and not the person they are going to be at the end of the journey.” Ellie commented.
“For me I’m 100% more confident, I’m happy to speak in front of people, I’ve got the communications skills I need to be an officer.”
After celebrating her graduation with family, Ellie will begin her new role as a Police Constable in September.
“It means the world. My mum's so proud of me – I'm the first person in the family to go to university. My partner, nan and grandad have been my biggest supporters as well.”
Ellie added: “I just want to say thank you to the University for giving me the best three years. I've really enjoyed my time here. The course has set me on the right path for an amazing career.”
