A Staffordshire University professor has been appointed as a panel member for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The REF is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. It is a major exercise undertaken by the four higher education funding bodies in the UK, with the results driving the allocation of public funding for research.

Being chosen to sit on one of these panels provides recognition of an individual’s professional standing. In addition to the appointments for the criteria setting phase, 200 new appointments have been made for roles in the assessment phase across the four main panels and the 34 sub-panels.

Nachiappan Chockalingam, Professor of Clinical Biomechanics at Staffordshire University, will sit on Sub-panel 24: Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism. Professor Chockalingam, Director of the Centre for Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Technologies within the School of Life Sciences and Education, said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed to the panel and I very much look forward to working with colleagues from across the sector in the development of the next REF.”

“We have a strong track record of inter-disciplinary translational research. Our work not only focuses on sport and human performance but includes aspects of technology development particularly for assistive devices. Our work influences clinical and professional practice in the developing and underdeveloped regions of the world."

Professor Martin Jones, the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: “Professor Chockalingam’s appointment to the REF panel is a testament to the strength of his expertise.

“Research continues to be a growing area of importance for Staffordshire University and we have a thriving research environment, with areas of established internationally recognised expertise. As a leading Civic University, research is a vital part of our platform as it helps to support the needs of regional and local organisations and businesses as well as being valuable nationally and internationally.”
