Senior Lecturer awarded title of Biomedical Scientist of the Year
A Staffordshire University lecturer has won the title Biomedical Scientist of the Year for his pioneering work which includes the development and delivery of degree apprenticeships.
Ian Davies, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health, Science and Wellbeing, was announced as winner of the prestigious award at the Advancing Healthcare Awards which celebrates the passion, dedication and innovation of allied health professionals.
Ian is course leader for the Healthcare Science degree apprenticeship which is helping to develop apprentices from over 25 NHS Trusts and which has already supported more than 40 graduates into careers as registered biomedical scientists.
Building on his 20-year career as a biomedical scientist working with the NHS, Ian has also worked with employers and professional bodies to revolutionise access to educational opportunities and boost the biomedical science workforce.
Commenting on the win, Ian said: “I’m delighted to receive the Biomedical Scientist of the Year award, not just for me but on behalf of all of my colleagues and NHS partners who support me to develop the next generation of biomedical scientists.
“At a time when the NHS is under such pressure, the work we are doing at Staffordshire University to develop and educate the next generation of biomedical scientists is vital to developing new diagnostics and improve patient outcomes. It is great that the innovative work we are doing here is being recognised at a national level.”
In 2018 Ian won the Advancing Healthcare Award for Inspiring the Future Biomedical Workforce and was also awarded the NHS England Chief Scientific Officer’s Award for Excellence in Education Delivery by HRH The Princess Royal and Professor Dame Sue Hill OBE.
In 2020 and 2021, he was listed in The Pathologist magazine’s Power List and was also appointed to the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science Network of Scientific Experts.
