Staffordshire University geared up for a busy Clearing

With an estimated 28,000 students currently not holding an offer or university place, Staffordshire University is pulling out all the stops for its busiest Clearing operation.

In addition to its usual operations, Staffordshire University has targeted thousands of sixth form and college leavers who may still require help in deciding their next steps.

Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Dr Annabel Kiernan said: “As a modern university focused on providing students with an academically excellent experience, we play an important role in helping our students achieve what they might have thought was out of their reach.

“We recognise that the last few years have been especially tough and that some students may lack the confidence to apply for university, even though they could be holding good grades. We are totally committed to supporting our learners to get the most out of their studies with us so we offer support for the transition to university through academic mentors, by developing digital learning skills and through an excellent welcome and induction programme.

“We’ve also invested millions of pounds transforming our facilities across our campuses in Staffordshire and London to make the student experience even better.

"If students are left wondering what to do or are unsure of the support on offer, we invite them to get in touch with us.”

Staffordshire University was recently named the fourth best university in the UK in the 2022 StudentCrowd Awards – based entirely on student reviews. It also came ninth for job prospects, 14th for course content and 16th for teaching quality.

MillionPlus, the Association for Modern Universities, has today (18 August) commented on A level results day.

Rachel Hewitt, Chief Executive of MillionPlus, said: “Record demand for places is pleasing and demonstrates that higher education remains a popular choice for students and their families. With modern universities at the forefront of widening participation, that we have also seen a shrinking gap between the most and least advantaged students is a hugely positive trend and one we hope to see continue.”

“Through the Clearing process thousands of places remain to be filled at outstanding universities across the country.”

Data experts DataHE estimate there are around 28,000 students not currently holding an offer of a university place, compared to 16,000 at this stage in the admissions process in 2019. Some of the rise is thought to be down to grades lowering as government regulators Ofqual are phasing activity to see grades return to pre-pandemic levels by 2023, following the last two years which saw higher than average grades during Covid when exams were cancelled and grades were based on teacher assessments.
