VFX students shine at industry awards
A trio of visual effects students from Staffordshire University have been recognised at the Domeble Symetri Student Awards.
The annual competition invites college and university students from 3D Design, CGI, CAD and photography courses around the world to submit entries across ten categories with over £50,000 of prizes on offer
The shortlisted students were invited to attend an awards ceremony this month to meet industry professionals and have their work critiqued.
Combining visual effects, 3D modelling, animation and digital technology, Staffordshire University’s BSc (Hons) CGI and Visual Effects degree teaches students the creative and technical skills required to produce awe-inspiring visual effects for film, television, games and advertising.
Students also have access to a host of industry standard facilities on campus including a Virtual Production Suite, green screen for CGI and Motion Capture Studio.
Final year student Tom Bloomfield won the Gold Award for ‘Best Full CG Scene’. Tom impressed the judges with his detailed design of a robot security guard falling asleep at its desk while an intruder breaks in.
The 20-year-old from Sheffield said: “It was fun and very rewarding to have my artwork win the award.”
Course mate Charlie Gibbs gained the Silver Award in the same category and Toru Kearton was awarded a Merit for ‘Best 3D/CAD Design in a Backplate Scene’.
Charlie, 20, from Guildford, commented: “The event was awesome and it was really great to have industry professionals look at my work and award it.”
The celebrations continued with Staffordshire University winning the award for ‘Best University / College’.
Course Leader, Dr Mel Lee, added: “I am absolutely delighted for the students and their success. They have worked incredibly hard and their achievements are a reflection of their strong work ethic, determination, and talent.”
