Perspectives for Mining Industry in Russia
RESOURCESTOCKS, a global resource investment magazine for businesses active in the share market, in its March edition published an interview with State Solutions' Margarita Agapidou.
Following State Solutions’ participation in Mines & Money London event earlier last year, Margarita discussed Russia’s mining industry and potential for foreign exploration companies in the region. She highlighted the changes in attracting foreign investments, exploration of mineral resources, licensing and usage of land and capital markets.
Margarita told Resourcestocks that "foreign exploration companies are not actively engaged in Russia due to the perception that operating there is tough, adding that Russia’s mineral potential is “not fully appreciated”. She noted that "despite all the negativity, there are foreign producers among the key mining companies in the country, especially gold," adding that "CEOs of key foreign industrial companies operating successfully in Russia communicated the importance of the local government understanding companies’ value proposition. They highlighted a number of regions where they experienced a “pioneering, welcoming and constructive approach”.
Agapidou noted that, with mining and natural resources playing such a critical role in Russia’s economy, modern Russia is seeking a greater place on the world stage. “So it is inevitable that the sector should go through substantial changes and reforms. The latter, in return, will attract direct foreign investments, which are no doubt necessary for the Russian economy and the mining sector in particular.” She said changes are being made in regards to attracting foreign investments, mineral resources and exploration, licensing and usage of land and capital markets.
