Skanska becomes general contractor for the renovation of the opera house in Stockholm, Sweden
The upcoming renovation and reconstruction of the opera house in Stockholm is the Swedish National Property Board’s most extensive project to date, with an estimated cost of SEK 3.5 billion. After a thorough procurement process, it is now confirmed that Skanska Sverige AB has been awarded the contract as the contractor.
As part of the work to develop the program documents, SFV began the process of procuring a contractor for the renovation, reconstruction, and extension of the opera house earlier this year. That process is now complete. Today, Skanska was awarded the assignment.
"The renovation of the opera house is a complex project that requires both the client’s and the contractor’s expertise to be utilized in the best possible way. Skanska has met all mandatory requirements and demonstrated that they understand and can fully meet our needs. We are satisfied with the outcome of the procurement and look forward to starting the collaboration," says Maria Östholm, Director and Project Owner for the renovation of the opera house.
What Skanska is now being contracted for in this first step is to contribute to the completion of the design work. A prerequisite for the next step is that the Government approves the request that SFV recently submitted.
Sweden’s national stage for opera and ballet is in poor condition and therefore needs a comprehensive renovation. To ensure the operations can function, the building also needs to be rebuilt and extended. When SFV completes the renovation, visitors will be welcomed to a well-preserved and modernized opera house featuring a new stage for children and young people.
