Today, the Swedish Government approved the National Property Board of Sweden’s (Statens fastighetsverk, SFV) request for investment funding for the renovation of the Royal Opera building in Stockholm. The decision allows SFV to invest SEK 3.25 billion in the opera building located at Gustav Adolfs Torg.

The decision paves the way for the continued development and future-proofing of one of Sweden’s most significant cultural buildings.

– This is a very important and welcome decision. The Government’s approval makes it possible to carry out the measures required to secure the functionality and long-term sustainability of the opera building. Through this renovation, we are creating the conditions for a national stage that offers a better working environment, more efficient logistics and an even stronger audience experience, while preserving and enhancing the cultural heritage values that make the building unique, says Maria Östholm, Director of Properties at the National Property Board of Sweden.

The renovation represents the largest investment in the history of the opera building and is SFV’s largest and most complex project to date. The project includes both the restoration of the historically significant building and the modernisation of the facilities used by the opera company.

The renovation includes the creation of a new stage for children and young audiences and three new ballet studios, while staff facilities will be modernised and adapted to the needs of the organisation. Public areas will be enhanced to provide visitors with an improved experience, including better acoustics. The building will also be equipped with modern technology and updated infrastructure that meet today’s requirements for functionality, safety and sustainability.

Taken together, these measures will improve the working environment, logistics and audience experience while securing the opera building’s long-term sustainability.

– This decision is the result of many years of work by employees, consultants and experts who have jointly analysed, planned and developed the project. We can now take the next step and continue creating the conditions for a modern national stage within a culturally and historically unique building, Maria Östholm continues.

The next key milestone is the continued work on the detailed development plan, while project planning can be further advanced and preparations for implementation can continue.
