The Swedish National Property Board requests funding for the Stockholm Opera Project

The Swedish National Property Board (SFV) has submitted a request to the government for authorization to carry out the renovation of the opera building in Stockholm, within a budget framework of SEK 3.25 billion.

Sweden’s national stage for opera and ballet is in very poor condition and requires extensive renovation. In order for operations to function properly, the building also needs to be rebuilt and extended. Once the renovation is complete, Sweden and Stockholm will have a modernized, functional, and carefully updated national stage for opera and ballet – including a new stage for children and young audiences.

The Feasibility Study Report 2.0, completed by SFV in June 2025, forms the basis for the ongoing design and zoning plan process within the opera project.

– A clear and approved budget framework is crucial to facilitate planning, implementation, and collaboration with the Royal Swedish Opera and Operakällaren. Therefore, we have now requested government funding to renovate the opera building in Stockholm. We estimate the cost at no more than SEK 3.25 billion, says Maria Östholm, Director and Project Owner at the Swedish National Property Board
