An 'Opportunities' staff team from Leeds have been shortlisted as finalists for a prestigious care industry accolade.

Simon Bedford, Mick Manning and Carla Millard, support workers for Affinity Trust in Leeds, represented the team at the judging day on October 11th and have made it through to the final of the Great Yorkshire and Humberside Care Awards in the 'Putting People First' category.

The team was nominated for their achievements in assisting individuals with learning disabilities to achieve goals and access to a variety of social, educational and health-based activities.

Simon Bedford, Affinity Trust Senior Support Worker, said: “Considering all the hard work that has been put into the service by the staff over the years it is great to be recognised for our consistent efforts.”

The Great Yorkshire and Humberside Care Awards will take place at The National Railway Museum on November 11th where the winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony by host comedienne, Jenny Eclair.

The staff at the Opportunities service support 53 individuals throughout the week across the Leeds area. The people supported have various needs relating to learning difficulties, physical difficulties as well as mental health support needs.

The awards have received support from across the social care sector, including the Adult Directors of Social Services (ADASS), Department of Health, Ceretas, the English Community Care Association (ECCA), the National Academy for Social Care and the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and Skills for Care.

Lisa Carr, a Director of the Great British Care Awards, said: “The awards offer a unique opportunity to celebrate the successes of individuals, teams and businesses throughout the UK - people who really do make a positive impact on people’s lives. The quality of the finalists was once again extremely high and it was humbly to meet so many local champions. The awards will really help to raise the profile of social care in the region and we are looking forward to what promises to be a superb awards evening.”
