Stockholm, January 14, 2025 – Stegra appoints Niklas Wass as Head of Operations in Boden, starting April 1, 2025. Wass joins the industrial scaleup company after 22 years at the stainless steelmaker Outokumpu.

Wass’ most recent role at Outokumu was President, Business Line Stainless Europe. Previous roles include Executive Vice President, Operations, Business Area Europe, as well as running Outokumpu’s operations in Tornio and Degerfors.

“Few people can match Niklas’ experience from electric arc furnace-based stainless-steel operations. In addition to that, he has values that match what we are looking for in our leadership at Stegra, is a great fit to build for the future and makes an already strong team even stronger. We are very glad to have him on board,” says Henrik Henriksson, CEO, Stegra.

Wass succeeds Markus Mannström who will take on a new role in Stegra as Head of Transition Office, focusing fully on coordinating and supporting the transition from the construction phase to start of production in Boden.

“Markus continues the great work for our project in Boden in a new role which will be very important in facilitating the start of production in our factory.", says Henriksson.

Stegra started construction of the integrated plant for green hydrogen, green iron and green steel in 2022, has now laid the foundations for the plant and is in the process of putting the roof and walls on its steel mill. The first equipment has been installed in the building where electric arc furnaces will melt the iron and produce the steel, and work is underway on the facility that will house the company’s 700-megawatt electrolyzer, which will be the largest in Europe. Production of green steel is planned to start in 2026.
