The new district of Hagastaden in Stockholm will become one of the world’s leading areas for life science. Merck & Co, the world’s third-largest pharmaceuticals company, is currently moving in as the first company to join this life science cluster.

Hagastaden is just now developing as a new district in Stockholm, the hub of which is the Karolinska Institute. The district is Sweden’s largest center for medical training and research in addition to the new university hospital (New Karolinska Solna), which is set to open in 2016. In order to create a unique base for research, development and highly-specialized care, the university, research and industry will all work in close cooperation.

“Hagastaden is a unique venture in the world and one of the largest in life science at a global level. It is important for us to participate in the development of the new cluster as early on as possible, in this way gaining access to the dynamics and skills which are now concentrated in a very small geographic area”, says Jacob Tellgren, CEO of Merck & Co in Sweden.

“This is the starting shot for a number of new companies to establish themselves here in Hagastaden and we will see an increase in investment and collaboration here, which is really great and important for the already successful branch in Stockholm Uppsala”, says Ylva Hultman, Business Development Manager of the Stockholm Business Region Development.

In addition to Karolinska Institute, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, the Stockholm School of Economics, the City of Stockholm, the City of Solna and the Stockholm County Council also stand behind the venture. The vision is to create an internationally competitive cluster where academia, healthcare and commerce can all develop together.

In total, 6,000 residences and 50,000 jobs will be accommodated in the new district.
