SEI and EASTECO forge partnership for research and innovation
The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Africa Centre and the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) have today formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding, announced at the third East Africa Community (EAC) regional science, technology, and innovation conference.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) sets the stage for enhanced cooperation in science, technology, innovation and research aimed at environmental management and sustainable development, aligning with the goals of the EAC Vision 2050. The collaboration will include specific initiatives aimed at improving environmental conditions and the quality of life for EAC citizens.
During the signing ceremony, Dr Sylvance Okoth, the Executive Secretary of EASTECO, said that EASTECO, as the EAC institution mandated to promote and coordinate the development, management and application of science and technology in the region, was excited to work with SEI leveraging on the institution’s strength in policy on science and research which has been pivotal in advancing the region’s science research and innovation agenda. He expressed optimism that the signing of the MoU is a step closer to deepening the cordial relationship that exists between SEI and EASTECO.
EASTECO and SEI have previously collaborated, along with BioInnovate Africa, leading to the development of the first East African regional bioeconomy strategy. Currently, these institutions are working on the second Report on the State of the Bioeconomy in Eastern Africa.
Dr Philip Osano, director of SEI Africa, said that the signing of the MoU between the two institutions heralds a new and exciting beginning of collaboration in the important spheres of science, innovation and technology for which both institutions have different levels of competence. He added that SEI, as a research institution that bridges science, policy and practice, will continue to work with EASTECO and other like-minded institutions to leapfrog the aspirations espoused by the EAC Vision 2050 strategy as well as the Agenda 2063; Africa's development blueprint that seeks to achieve inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development over a 50-year period.
The MoU outlines potential areas for cooperation, including research, policy engagement and capacity building in science, technology, and innovation. It also encompasses sustainable development in the bioeconomy, science diplomacy, trade, environment and climate change. The partners will develop annual workplans to specify activities and allocate budgets for these collaborative areas.
