Stockholm Environment Institute calls on the SDG Summit: it is time to lead with science to accelerate the Global Goals

The 2023 SDG Summit will take place on 18-19 September in New York. SEI researchers have put forward an array of insights and recommendations aimed at guiding policymakers to accelerate progress towards the Global Goals.

At the Summit, global representatives will explore actionable policy guidance, focused on the complete realization of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at all levels. The recently published Global Sustainable Development Report 2023 starkly highlights that the world is not on track to reach the goals by 2030. The report's key takeaways will be in focus at the SDG Summit.

"First, world leaders need to show that they stand by the promise and take decisive action to achieve the goals. Secondly, they must strengthen international cooperation and ensure longer-term financing for sustainable development. The world's rich countries have a great responsibility here," says Åsa Persson, Research Director and Deputy Director at Stockholm Environment Institute and one of 15 UN-appointed members of the Independent Group of Scientist responsible for the report.
