Director Mary Harron to receive the 2018 Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award
Mary Harron became one of the biggest names in film with the cult classic American Psycho. This year, the Canadian director and screenwriter will be honored with the Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award. Mary Harron will visit Stockholm International Film Festival to present her latest film Charlie Says and to accept the world’s heaviest film prize – the Bronze Horse.

The 2018 Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a director with a singular vision and brilliant touch for depicting controversial personalities on screen. Mary Harron has always taken risks and brought the audience to the darkest corners of the human psyche. She has portrayed some of our time’s most notorious characters, real and fictive, from Valerie Solanas to Charles Manson via Patrick Bateman. Mary Harron visited Stockholm International Film Festival for the first time in 1996 with her celebrated debut film I Shot Andy Warhol, and it is with great pleasure that we welcome her back.
Mary Harron has an impressive career behind her with close to 30 film and television productions on her resume. She visited Stockholm International Film Festival for the first time in 1996 with her debut film I Shot Andy Warhol, when the film’s lead actress Lili Taylor won the award for Best Actress. 22 years later, Mary Harron is coming back to Stockholm to accept one of our most honorable awards – the Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award.
Her long career in film includes titles such as the cult classic American Psycho (2000), The Notorious Bettie Page (2005) and The Moth Diaries (2011), as well as her latest film Charlie Says that will have its Nordic premiere at Stockholm International Film Festival.
Charlie Says is a dark portrayal of the notorious Manson family. In the film, Harron focuses on the three young women who murdered at the behest of Charles Manson in 1969.
Mary Harron has also directed episodes of several television shows including Six Feet Under, Big Love and The L Word, as well as all six episodes of the Netflix mini-series Alias Grace (2017) based on Margaret Atwood’s novel with the same name.
Harron’s next project is a feature biopic about the artist Salvador Dalí, a film she is co-writing with her husband, American screenwriter and director John C. Walsh.
Mary Harron will be in Stockholm to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award and participate in a Face2Face conversation in conjunction with the screening of Charlie Says on Saturday, November 10th at 6:00 PM at Biograf Skandia in Stockholm.
