Storytel to launch in South Korea before Year’s End

During 2019, Storytel AB (“Storytel”) will start operations in South Korea as part of the company’s strategy of global expansion and growth, which this year has also included Germany, Brazil, and most recently Singapore.

Storytel is pleased to announce its plans to launch its service in South Korean in late 2019. As part of Storytel’s efforts to provide customers with the finest audio and e-book experiences, the app will be available in Korean.

Storytel has already established an affiliate in the capital of Seoul, and is busy producing audio books for the South Korean market. When the service goes live at the end of 2019, Storytel plans to have thousands of original and licensed titles on offer in Korean –– in addition to its market-leading global catalogue of approximately 270,000 audio and e-book titles. During the first year of operation the main focus will be to continue building a strong content library with high competitiveness.

According to Publication Industry of Korea, 2017, and Publication Industry Expert Meeting, June 2018, Korea has a 250 million USD per year audio- and e-book industry. It is primarily supported by younger customers: 66% of South Korean audio-book listeners are under forty. Statistics show South Koreans prefer listening to audiobooks at home, while commuting, in the car, and just before bedtime.

“Our opening shop in South Korea reflects Storytel’s ongoing expansion to markets with strong growth and commercial potential. South Korea is a dynamic economy with a young, tech-savvy profile and a growing audio- and e-book market, and we think Storytel can really make a difference –– both in terms of our library of titles, and our and customer experience,” says Stefan Tegenfalk, Head of Expansion at Storytel.
