Strakka Racing ready for Gibson debut at the Six Hours of Nürburgring
After lapping fastest of the LMP2 runners at the Nürburgring WEC Test, Strakka Racing looks forward to debuting Gibson 015S chassis
Strakka Racing travels to the Nürburgring for the final round of the World Endurance Championship’s European leg next week, intent on scoring valuable points in the LMP2 Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships before the four fly-away races.
“Missing out on the double points available at Le Mans has left us with more work to do this season than we’d hoped, no question,” says Strakka Racing team principal Dan Walmsley. “Now with the successful test, with straight out of the box pace, the team and drivers are in a more positive frame of mind for the balance of the season and there’s no reason why we can’t be back at the front.”
Fastest at the WEC test in July was Jonny Kane who has always enjoyed the challenge the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit has to offer. “I’ve always gone well here since my debut in 2005 in the TVR,” says Kane. “It’s a good track, a little narrower than some of the places we now race so it’s a little trickier to overtake. The short straights mean even if a driver makes a mistake in one of the technical sections, it’s sometimes hard to take advantage, but I like the track.”
Despite having raced at the Nürburgring a number of times in the TVR, Panoz and the most recent being 2009 in the Rebellion Lola Judd, Jonny has never completed a lap of the Nordschleife. “My brother and dad go nearly every year, usually after the Spa WEC round. They dragged a 1,600 Astra round last time. I’ve got to do it one day!”
The 5.1km GP layout of the Nürburgring plays host to the current form of the World Endurance Championship for the first time this year, after re-developments to the Interlagos circuit in São Paulo Brazil prompted the FIA to make changes to the calendar. A regular on the F1 schedule, the latest configuration of the world-famous Eifel circuit has played host to international sportscar racing since its opening in 1984.
On-track action for the WEC teams runs from the 28th to 30th of August with the race starting 13.00 local German time.
