Studsvik in partnership with Kärnfull Next investigates the potential for small modular reactors on the Studsvik site
Studsvik has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kärnfull Next, who is to investigate the possibility of building and operating small modular reactors (SMRs) on the Studsvik site near Nyköping. An ongoing feasibility study is evaluating the financial, technological, environmental and societal feasibility of this. Preliminary results indicate that the site de facto has potential for SMR establishment.
The need for electricity in the southern parts of Sweden is expected to grow substantially in the future. The Studsvik site, with its strategic location and Studsvik’s broad expertise in nuclear technology, could offer an opportunity to meet this need. Establishing SMRs on the Studsvik site would be in line with Studsvik’s vision "Develop nuclear sustainability". Nuclear power contributes to an environmentally sustainable future, as it is an important component in managing the ongoing climate transition that focuses on reducing the use of fossil energy.
"With its extensive expertise in the nuclear technology sector, Studsvik is the perfect partner for us", says Christian Sjölander, CEO and founder of Kärnfull Next. "The Studsvik site seems to be well suited to become Sweden’s first new nuclear power site, accompanying the three that already exist. Our vision is that one of Europe’s first SMR parks can be taken into operation here already in the early 2030s. Having several small reactors creates future-proof jobs and opportunities for co-location with other high-tech industries."
Provided the feasibility study indicates favorable conditions - not least as regards local acceptance - a decision on possible continuation of the project will be taken jointly by Studsvik and Kärnfull Next in the second half of 2024.
"Kärnfull Next has established itself as a reliable and innovative partner with solid expertise", says Camilla Hoflund, CEO of Studsvik. "We welcome the partnership and look forward to the outcome of the feasibility study. At present it is too early to say what this may mean for Studsvik, as the conditions have not yet been fully investigated and there are many years left before a possible establishment of an SMR at the Studsvik site."
