Studsvik Secures U.S. NRC Approval Supporting Next-Generation Nuclear Reactor Development
Nyköping, June 8, 2026 - Studsvik has received regulatory approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S. NRC) for Supplement 1 to the Studsvik Scandpower CMS5 Generic Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Topical Report, extending its applicability to both existing and next-generation nuclear reactors. This is an extension of the existing U.S. NRC approval of the Generic PWR Topical Report and further expands Studsvik’s role in the nuclear industry as a trusted and approved service provider enabling the industry with advanced tools and solutions for the future.
This significant milestone reinforces Studsvik’s position as a global leader in advanced nuclear software solutions, enabling the company to better support customers with plant life extension initiatives while also assisting reactor designers in the licensing and development of next-generation technologies, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs).
The approval expands the capability of Studsvik’s CMS5 software, enabling its use for plants transitioning to higher fuel enrichment levels (up to 8 weight percent) and supporting increased fuel burnup (up to 80 GWd/MTU (Gigawatt-days per Metric Ton of Uranium)) to facilitate longer operating cycles. It also confirms the software’s approval for use in light water reactor-based SMR designs.
“Studsvik Scandpower’s commitment to serving as a global, independent provider of nuclear software and physics solutions positions us to bring advanced neutronics and reactor physics capabilities to the forefront of the industry,” said W. A. Art Wharton III, Business Area President of Studsvik Scandpower and President of Studsvik Americas. “This approval enables us to support not only today’s operating fleet but also emerging reactor developers as they pursue regulatory licensing and innovation in next-generation nuclear technologies.”
