We may not like a wet summer but Rhododendrons love it and, because it rained in June and July 2010, the rhododendron display at Trewithen Garden, Cornwall, this Easter is the best ever.And it’s not just rhododendrons, the award-winning estate near Truro also has an amazing display of early bluebells and some stunning yellow magnolias. Whilst rain during the budding season last summer helped this year’s flowers, Head Gardener, Gary Long, explained that a decision to remove or lower the height of much of the garden’s laurel hedging has also done much to increase the amount of vibrant blooms

CHANCE TO OWN A RARE CHINESE BERBERIS SHRUB

A rare Chinese Berberis shrub, recently discovered growing in Trewithen Gardens near Truro, Cornwall, has been successfully propagated and a dozen plants are now available for sale at the estate’s nursery.Trewithen’s berberis francisci-ferdinandii parent plant is the oldest and, standing at 15ft, the tallest in the UK. It’s also so rare it is known to be growing in only two other places - Kew Gardens, the home of horticulture and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. TREWITHEN’S PURPLE PRIDE

Trewithen Purple, a hybrid Rhododendron produced at Trewithen Garden, near Truro in Cornwall, has been officially recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society with a Certificate of International Status.The plant, which has been growing in the garden since 1986, was registered and given an RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2009. Just before Christmas Trewithen’s Head Gardener, Gary Long, received an impressive gold embossed certificate confirming the plant’s registration - the closest a plant can get to a patent or copyright.
