German solar firm, Suncycle GmbH, is joining forces with UK based engineering and operational services provider, Cobalt Energy Ltd, to provide UK solar PV customers with a complete aftersales and operation & maintenance service package.

Suncycle has been leading the German solar market since 2007, and brings advanced operational and maintenance techniques such as mobile electroluminescence, flash testing & aerial thermography analysis to the UK industry as well as the standard preventive and reactive maintenance services. It will offer its customers support with system optimisation and long term risk mitigation, protecting investments by maximising plant performance.

John Davies, Managing Director of Suncycle Ltd said: “We are excited to collaborate in this new venture with Suncycle Germany. The new company shows our confidence in the UK solar market in a post Brexit environment. By combining Suncycle’s extensive experience across Europe in testing and servicing with Cobalt Energy’s well established solar operation and maintenance service, we will be able to offer unique professional and technical expertise and services.”

The Managing Director of Suncycle GmbH, Dr Mischa Paterna said: “Solar PV is currently one of the cheapest forms of installed electricity generation and the UK has seen an influx of international solar modules over the last few years, predominantly from the Far East. However these modules have historically been prone to deterioration and a multitude of failure mechanisms. These defects need to be detected by advanced operation and maintenance techniques such as aerial thermography and electroluminescence testing. Our mobile services will offer early detection and rectification of these defects, saving asset owners thousands each year.”

With a maturing market, the focus of the UK solar industry is now moving away from construction and shifting towards operation and maintenance services as solar PV installations come to the end of their warranty periods. The construction of large scale solar farms is also expected to decrease after April 2017 following the removal of the Renewable Obligation Certificate subsidiary and decrease in the Feed-in-Tariff scheme.

However the UK market is still estimated to reach 11GWp of installed solar PV by April 2017, which will need to be maintained. This installed capacity will provide a secure source of energy and help the UK to meet its national targets for renewable energy generation, with the Government encouraging localised energy supply.

Suncycle Ltd will be exhibiting at the Clean Energy Live exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham, 4th – 6th October (stand G16).
