Rally Sweden Improves Environmental Performance

Report this content

Following a year of implementing environmental recommendations,
Rally Sweden has improved its performance and been awarded
‘Achievement of Excellence’, the top-level accreditation in the
FIA Institute’s Sustainability Programme.

In 2013, the World Rally Championship event gained accreditation
at the second tier – ‘Progress towards Excellence’. Since then it has
developed more environmentally sound structures, as well as precise
routines and procedures to limit the event’s environmental impact.
These include a more efficient system for management to evaluate,
manage and report environmental impact areas and developing a
clearer, more resourceful procurement strategy.

The environmental audit for 2014 noted the effort made by
organisers in improving these areas along with sustained
developments in general performance, including an
online ‘Environmental Education Kit’ available to all involved in
staging the rally. Further commitment was demonstrated by the use
of an Environmental Emergency Vehicle, supplied by Volkswagen,
which is available to the Clerk of the Course, Race Control and Stage
Commander throughout the course of the weekend.

FIA Institute Deputy President and Environmental Ambassador
Garry Connelly said: “It is fantastic to see Rally Sweden take on our
recommendations to improve its environmental practices. This
highlights the main purpose of the Sustainability Programme, which
is to help motor sport stakeholders to measure their impact and then
improve their environmental performance.”

Glenn Olsson, Managing Director of Rally Sweden, said: “The
environmental impact of our event is something we are acutely
aware of and we immediately engaged with the FIA Institute’s
programme when it launched. Following our accreditation
at ‘Progress towards Excellence’, we worked closely with the FIA
Institute experts and our partners at SITA Sweden to implement an
even more thorough environmental management system. We are
delighted that this has been recognised with the ‘Achievement of Excellence’ accreditation.”

Editors Note
The FIA Institute’s Environmental Accreditation Scheme is a targeted
programme to improve sustainability across motor sport worldwide. It provides
an environmental management framework that stakeholders can engage in
and offers incentives for them to advance their environmental performance.

This initiative builds on the FIA and FIA Institute’s commitment to
environmental innovation and excellence already established through the
development of eco-relevant sporting regulations and automotive policy
work. The FIA and FIA Institute will continue to collaborate in this area going
forward to ensure improvements in the sustainability of motor sport around the
world.

The Accreditation Framework has three levels of progress – Commitment to
Excellence, Progress towards Excellence and Achievement of Excellence.

1. Commitment (to Excellence)
Where a stakeholder meets the minimum criteria expected for the
programme.

2. Progress (towards Excellence)
Where a stakeholder demonstrates clear progress across the range of criteria
for the programme.

3. Achievement (of Excellence)
Where a stakeholder meets best practice in every area of the programme.

Rally Sweden is the most breathtaking and exciting experience on ice and snow in the WRC series.
No other winter rally offers that pace and high average speed. It is often called the uncrowned Formula1 race on winter surface.
