3 months until 30 June 2016 - SEK 3.6 billion will become invalid
After 30 June 2016, the older versions of the 20-, 50- and 1,000-krona banknotes will become invalid.
There are still a lot of banknotes in circulation that will become invalid after 30 June 2016. In total, there are 67 million banknotes to a value of SEK 3.6 billion that will soon be no longer possible to use. If you laid the banknotes end to end, they would stretch 8,000 kilometres, five times the length of Sweden.
Denomination | (millions) | SEK billion |
20-krona banknotes | 55 | 1.1 |
50-krona banknotes | 10 | 0.5 |
1,000-krona banknotes | 2 | 2 |
“A lot of banknotes have come in but there are still a lot left. It is important for those who have the older banknotes to realise that 30 June is the last day on which they can be used. The easiest option is to use the banknotes to pay for things or to deposit them into a bank account,” says Christina Wejshammar, Head of the Cash and Payments Systems Department.
After 30 June 2016, it will be possible to deposit banknotes in a bank account until 31 August 2016.
Next step in the banknote and coin changeover
In October this year, the new 100- and 500-krona banknotes will be introduced, together with the new coins: 1-, 2- and 5-krona. The older versions will become invalid after 30 June 2017.
There are a lot of coins that will become invalid after 30 June 2017; 1.6 billion coins in total to a value of SEK 2.6 billion. If you have amassed a lot of coins, it is a good idea to start using them now, because if everyone waits until summer 2017, it will be difficult for the shops and banks to take care of all the coins.
