New motif on this year's 1-krona coin

Report this content

All 1-krona coins minted in 2009 will carry a new motif on their reverse to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Finland’s separation from Sweden.

The coin is being presented today to King Carl XVI Gustaf and to Finland’s President Tarja Halonen by the Chairman of the General Council of the Riksbank, Johan Gernandt. This takes place in connection with the opening ceremony for the Landmark Year of 1809 in the Riksdag, the Swedish parliament.

The reverse of the 1-krona has a special strike composed by designer Annie Winblad Jakubowski. This consists of a symbolic depiction of the sea as a link connecting Sweden and Finland. Along the upper edge is the quotation “DEN UNDERBARA SAGAN OM ETT LAND PÅ ANDRA SIDAN HAFVET” (the wonderful tale of a land beyond the sea), taken from Johan Ludvig Runeberg's book “Studentbesöket i Finland 1857”. The obverse of the coin is unchanged and depicts King Carl XVI Gustaf in profile. The designer is Ernst Nordin.

The coin is manufactured by the Mint of Finland.
