Sweco has been chosen to prepare a development strategy for the Kagera River in Africa. The assignment is one of a number of initiatives focusing on equitable use and sharing of water resources between countries in Africa.

”Sweco has longstanding experience in studying sustainable development of rivers and lakes. There is an urgent need for our expertise, since many countries have unresolved conflicts surrounding the use of transboundary water resources,” says Eva Nygren, President of Sweco Sweden. The Kagera River flows from Burundi in the north all the way down to Lake Victoria. On its way, it runs along the border between Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The assignment includes the development of a model to support integrated planning and management for the Kagera River Basin. Sweco will also establish and rank future development projects. Sweco has been involved in a number of assignments on behalf of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), a partnership for sustainable water and natural resource management. Among other things, Sweco has prepared a program and project proposal for the Mara River on the border between Kenya and Tanzania and for the Sio-Malaba-Malakisi River on the border between Kenya and Uganda. The assignment is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Norwegian Agency for International Development (NORAD). The contract is worth nearly EUR 188,000.
