SWECO will carry out the detailed engineering design of the first sanitary landfill in compliance with the new environmental legislation in the Philippines. The facility is to be built in Surigao City in the southern Philippines. The contract is worth over 431,000 euros.

The assignment is a continuation of the strategic waste planning project carried out by SWECO in 2003, when the entire waste management system in Surigao City was studied from inefficient waste collection to illegal dumping. SWECO also drew up action plans for an improved future waste management system. ”The activities in Surigao have attracted considerable attention in the Philippines, since many municipalities need help in meeting the country’s new environmental requirements,” says Karin Eberle, Project Manager at SWECO VIAK. The new landfill will be the first waste treatment facility developed in accordance with the country’s new environmental legislation. The assignment runs until January 2006 and is being financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida.
