SWECO has been awarded a contract to improve the water and wastewater systems of twelve mid-sized cities in Honduras. The assignment is being carried out in collaboration with a local consulting company and is worth a total of 1.55 million euros.

At present, most of the twelve cities lack water and wastewater treatment facilities. Consequently, the tap water is not safe to drink and raw sewage is in many cases discharged directly into the sea or nearby rivers. SWECO’s tasks include planning and design of new water and wastewater treatment plants and upgrading of the existing facilities and piping systems. The assignment will run until December 2005 and is being carried out in collaboration with ESA Consultores, a Honduran consulting company. Project financing is being provided by the Nordic Development Fund, NDF. The twelve cities included by the project have populations of between 5,000 and 35,000. SWECO is involved in a number of environmental projects in Latin America, including an assignment to improve management of hazardous hospital waste in the Honduran capital city of Tegucigalpa.
