Sweco’s architects, together with Danish Aart Architects, have won an architectural competition for remodelling and expansion of Kungälv Hospital.

“Sweco has been successfully carrying out major healthcare assignments for many years. This is further evidence that we have the knowledge and special skills that are necessary in this type of large-scale project for the healthcare sector,” says Jan Mattsson, President of Sweco Architects.

The competition win means designing new and rebuilding existing care facilities at the hospital, which will among other things result in a total of around 220 beds and a new main entrance. The jury’s choice of Sweco’s and Aart’s proposal as the winning bid highlighted aspects such as the elegant interplay with the existing hospital, which they feel effectively preserves and enhances the building’s character. Sweco and Aart have previously collaborated in designing the new acute treatment centre in Viborg, Denmark.

“Winning the competition in Kungälv has further cemented our partnership, and together we form a strong team for healthcare architecture in the Nordic region,” says Anders Tyrrestrup, partner at Aart Architects.

Work will begin in the spring of 2013 and the building is scheduled for completion in 2017.
