Sweco has been chosen to design the structural frame for a new laboratory to be built as part of the New Karolinska Hospital in Solna, Sweden. The result will be an 11-storey building with the best possible environmental performance.

“We have been involved in development of the New Karolinska Hospital in Solna for several years. Laboratory activities are a central and essential function for the hospital and make this assignment an exciting challenge for Sweco,” says Sören Hed, President of Sweco Structures.

In the assignment, Sweco will be responsible for engineering design of the structural frame. All design work will be done in 3D, which makes it easy to get an overall picture of the process and facilitates quality assurance. Assembly of the laboratory’s structural frame is scheduled to begin in June 2013 and the new facilities are expected to open in the autumn of 2016. The assignment is being carried out on behalf of Skanska Stomsystem.

New Karolinska Solna (NKS) is the project name for a new hospital that is under construction on the site of the existing Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, outside Stockholm. NKS is being designed to meet the highest level in Miljöbyggnad (Environmental Building), a Swedish system for classifying the total environmental performance of buildings. Sweco has previously contributed to NKS as a project manager and is also providing expertise in technical installations, logistics, environmental engineering and infrastructure.
