Sweco has been commissioned to procure and manage the design of the City Rail Loop, which is Helsinki’s major investment in a new commuter rail line under the city. The new railway will improve public transport in Helsinki, while at the same time relieving the national long-distance rail traffic. Sweco has been commissioned by the Finnish Transport Agency and the contract is valued at EUR 3.4 million.

– The City Rail Loop is a very challenging project and it is our expertise in underground structures and experience from similar assignments that won over the client, says Jyrki Keinänen, President of Sweco's project management operations in Finland.

In addition to procurement and design management, Sweco will also be responsible for procurement of some of the expertise required in performing the actual construction work. The final result will be a seven kilometer long railway track, six kilometers underground, with three associated stations. The City Rail Loop is going to ease congestion for the long-distance trains to the central station in the middle of Helsinki. The commuter trains will run in the new tunnel and have close links to subway and bus services, leading to smoother commuter traffic.
