Sweco to modernise Norwegian railway lines
Sweco has been commissioned by Jernbaneverket, the Norwegian government’s agency for railway services, to electrify the Norwegian Trønder Line and Meråker Line. The assignment is valued at about SEK 26 million.
– This project represents an important upgrade for the Mid-Norway region. This is the first time Norwegian railway lines will be electrified since the 1970s, and this will improve both the capacity, efficiency and environmental aspects of the region’s public transport system, says Grete Aspelund, Managing Director of Sweco Norway.
The Trønder Line and Meråker Line include the busiest railway stretch in the Mid-Norway region, and form an important artery for the transportation of both passengers and goods. The electrification of these lines will reduce CO2 emissions by 12.300 tonnes per year.
The lines cover a distance of approx. 200 kilometres, and the estimated total cost of the project is NOK 3 billion. Under the contract, Sweco will be responsible for detail planning and preparing tender documents for the construction of autotransformers and overhead contact lines. Sweco will provide a broad spectrum of expertise under the assignment, ranging from rail technology to construction and environmental regulation.
– The growing cities place a higher demand on efficient transport systems, and a modern railway plays a central role. Sweco participates as expert in several places around the Nordic countries to design the railway of the future, says Grete Aspelund.
Sweco’s work will begin immediately, and continue until spring 2017. The upgraded railway lines are scheduled to be operating in 2023.
