Sweco to prepare for ring road in Kazakhstan
Sweco has been chosen by the IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, to prepare for the construction of a ring road around Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty. This work will lead to a better traffic flow and lower noise in the city centre.
“This contract is a confirmation of our expertise in traffic modelling. It is also exciting to know that our efforts will lead to significantly reduced congestion and a better traffic environment in the area,” says Bo Carlsson, President of Sweco Russia.
The project is being driven as a public private partnership and Sweco’s task is to prepare a financial assessment and modelling of the investment that will serve as a decision-making platform for potential financiers. The study will also show what share of the investment can be expected to be financed by road tolls.
Today, one of the main roads between Europe and China passes through Almaty, leading to severe traffic jams and environmental problems. The final results of Sweco’s contribution will be a basis for a 67-kilometre ring road around Almaty that will reduce traffic and noise in the inner-city while at the same time improving the flow of traffic.
The assignment, which will be carried out by Sweco’s Russian office in St Petersburg, will involve experts in socioeconomics, traffic modelling and environmental engineering. Work will be underway until the end of 2013.
