SWECO VBB has been commissioned by the Swedish National Rail Administration to plan a whole new track connection between Boliden’s mine in Aitik and the city of Gällivare. The contract is worth an estimated EUR 322,000.

At present, the ore is transported from Aitik to Gällivare by road, for continued transport by rail to the smelter at Rönnskär, Skelleftehamn. The new track connection will replace all road transports. The construction of a new terminal in Aitik will also result in reduced loading and unloading with loaders/forklifts. SWECO VBB’s assignment includes the preparation of a railway plan, system documents for the new rail line and terminal, and a work plan for rebuilding of roads. Work will begin immediately and is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2007. The assignment will be carried out in collaboration between SWECO VIAK and SWECO Energuide.
