SWECO wins new assignment in Tanzania

SWECO Energuide is continuing its efforts to electrify rural areas of Tanzania. In a new study, the company will formulate a proposal for extension of the transmission network in the country’s southernmost districts.

”We are involved in several similar assignments throughout Tanzania. It is highly satisfying to be given the chance to continue participating in this expansive development aimed at enhancing quality of life for the country’s inhabitants,” says Anders Ståhl, Overseas Manager at SWECO Energuide. In the study, SWECO Energuide will examine the potential to build a new transmission line from the city of Makambako down to the southern regions, and to study how the regional distribution network can be expanded. Only one per cent of all households in rural Tanzania have access to electricity via the national grid. Electrification will provide local companies with a reliable source of power and lead to the creation of new jobs. Significant environmental gains will also be made when the diesel generators currently used to supply parts of the region with electricity are replaced. The study will run for six months and will be carried out in collaboration with Norconsult. The contract is worth over 215,000 euros and is being funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida. The client is the electric power utility Tanesco.
